Is it necessary to accelerate the maturation of compost and why summer residents do not favor maturation accelerators

The maturation of compost can be accelerated by using special preparations. This allows you to get fertilizer much faster. But in some cases, the use of such products is necessary, and in some it is not advisable. Let's figure it out.

Why you need to accelerate the maturation of compost

Compost is one of the most popular organic fertilizers. It contains a large amount of valuable substances. Such fertilizer is not only effective, but also the cheapest. You can make it yourself by placing grass, leaves and other ingredients in a pile or in a special box.

Under the influence of microorganisms, organic matter decomposes. The maturation time of compost depends on many factors:

  • varieties of components laid on the heap;
  • environmental conditions (temperature and humidity);
  • heap sizes.

Crushed grass and food debris are the fastest to rot. Dry foliage decomposes very slowly. Under natural conditions, compost matures from 6 to 12 months.

Natural Steps for Getting Compost Fast

Experienced gardeners know that it is possible to accelerate the decomposition of organic matter in a natural way, by fulfilling a number of conditions:

  • do not make the compost heap too high (the optimal height and width of the compost heap is 1–1.5 m, and the length can be any);
  • chop the grass before laying compost, do not put components that rot for a long time on a pile;
  • when laying, add fertile soil or rotted manure between layers of grass and foliage (1 bucket per 1 cubic meter of compost);
  • occasionally stir up a bunch (1-2 times a month);
  • in dry weather, water the pile (1-2 times a month), and in rainy weather, cover with foil.

All these recommendations allow you to naturally accelerate the maturation of the compost for several months without losing the quality of the finished fertilizer. If these conditions are met, the compost laid in early autumn will become a ready-made fertilizer in the spring. There is no need to speed up the process. If the compost was laid late or if dry leaves were sent to the heap, unshredded grass with tough stems and other components that rot for a long time, composting accelerators can be used.

It is better to put compost in a special box, not in bags.

Special preparations for compost heaps

There are special preparations that can significantly reduce the decomposition of organic matter: Ekomik, Gumi-Omi Kompostin, EM Bokashi, Compostello. They include microorganisms in dried form or in the form of suspensions. Once inside the heap, bacteria come out of the state of suspended animation and begin to intensively decompose organic matter. They need to be added when laying compost, spilling a bunch of working solutions in layers.

The question of the necessity and harmlessness of using composting accelerators worries many gardeners. The advantage of using all these tools is obvious. The compost ripening time is reduced to 2-5 months... This is very important in a situation where there is no room on the site to lay multiple piles. In this case, the compost collected in the fall can be used for its intended purpose in early spring.

When laying on a pile of dry leaves, tall grass in an unmilled form, accelerators of organic decomposition must be used without fail. Otherwise, such compost will mature for more than 1 year. But in other situations, they will not help much. Without proper stacking and tedding, the added microorganisms will still not cope with the task.

Can accelerating composting harm fertilizer quality?

Composting accelerators do not contain chemicals and do not significantly affect the quality of the finished compost. Many experienced gardeners consider their use simply impractical due to their high cost. Industrial products are often replaced with a popular analogue - a solution of baker's yeast.

And the use of yeast as an accelerator of organic decomposition can just have a negative impact on the quality of the final fertilizer. In this case, the content of some microelements, and especially potassium, is reduced in the compost. However, it is quite easy to eliminate this disadvantage: potassium phosphate can be added to the yeast solution at the rate of 1 tbsp. l. for 10 liters of solution.

To speed up the decomposition processes, some gardeners do not put compost on a heap, but in plastic bags. This will allow the leaves to grind faster, but the quality of the fertilizer will suffer greatly. In conditions of a lack of oxygen, many beneficial microorganisms lose their activity. It is undesirable to resort to this method of reducing the maturation time of compost.

I try not to use compost maturation accelerators. Adhering to the advice of one of the authoritative experts, when laying the heap, I sprinkle the layers with fertile soil or rotted manure. I think this is quite enough.

Composting accelerators help to significantly reduce fertilizer ripening times. In this case, one should carefully approach their choice. In some cases, the addition of drugs can harm the quality of the finished compost.
