I can't imagine life without eggplants, because they can be salted, fried, stewed, and baked. And how good eggplant caviar is, it is impossible to describe at all. Therefore, I try to plant at least 1-2 interesting varieties of eggplant on my site every season.


Kirovsky is an excellent early maturing variety that will show consistently high yields for at least 95-105 days. If I see that the weather is unstable, then I always choose it for landing, so as not to miscalculate.

It tolerates temperature changes well and grows well both in the greenhouse and in the open field. It has a high immunity to many diseases, so there is no need to fear for its health.

The eggplant bush of this variety lacks pronounced thorns. In height, it grows to an average of 70 cm, rarely higher. The weight of one fruit per bush varies between 130-150 grams. The shape of Kirov eggplants is elongated, cylindrical, the fruit color is deep purple with a characteristic glossy sheen. All eggplants are neat, as if from a picture. Kirovsky bears fruit for so long due to the large number of ovaries.

The taste of this variety is also all right: the pulp is tender, without bitterness, the density is medium. From 1 sq. meter of planting, I am quite able to collect about 4.5-5 kg ​​of vegetables.

Donskoy 14

Another stable fruitful variety is Donskoy 14. I usually plant it if I know for sure that the harvest this season will surpass all conceivable and inconceivable scales for me. I love making homemade eggplant caviar, as well as cooking eggplant in oil and vegetable stew, so this type of eggplant is perfect for its versatility.

The variety belongs to the mid-season category, it feels great both in open beds and in a greenhouse. In principle, it tolerates temperature changes well, but without any weather disasters.

Donskoy's fruits are very beautiful, neat, dense, pear-shaped. The color of the vegetables is violet-red (green-brown during ripening). The taste is soft, without bitterness or astringency, great for any dish.


A mid-season variety that begins to bear fruit at about 100-105 days. It stores well, so if you plan to stock up on vegetables, then choose this particular variety. At least, my personal experience of storing and transporting these eggplants was quite positive: not a single vegetable deteriorated, rotted or lost its presentation.

You can plant Matrosik both in open beds and in closed ground. The variety has high immunity, most diseases do not take it. His bushes are quite high, they can grow up to 85 cm. Meters. Sometimes you can collect up to 10-11 kg of harvest, so that is enough for harvesting, and for preservation, and just to eat.

But the most interesting thing, perhaps for me, is the appearance of these eggplants. Each fruit reaches 16-19 cm in length, I have not identified any average weight indicators. But the color of these vegetables is quite original - they are striped, with white stripes alternating with bright purple or pink stripes. Hence the original name, because eggplants seem to be dressed up in vests.

Everything is also good with the taste characteristics: the pulp has no voids, is not too dense, without pronounced bitterness or acidity.


I mainly use this variety only for pickling. With him, like with no other, preserves are very tasty, aromatic, crispy. The yield of the variety is excellent, the yield of the fruits is early.

The bushes are quite compact, of medium height (up to 65 cm). Can be grown both in open soil and in a greenhouse. The fruits are slightly elongated, cylindrical in shape, the size of one vegetable reaches 19-21 cm (about 6-7 cm in diameter), the weight of one varies between 250-550 g. But the most remarkable feature of this variety is the color of ripe fruits. It is white, hence the poetic name of the variety.

The taste of eggplants is very delicate, mushroom, without pronounced bitterness. meter of planting, you can collect up to 20 kg of vegetables. To squeeze the maximum out of the plantings, I leave no more than 5-6 large inflorescences on each bush.

My love for eggplant seems inexhaustible, which is why I love experimenting with different varieties, trying something new.   • The presence of immunity to diseases of the nightshade. Eggplants often suffer from fungal, bacterial and viral diseases that can significantly reduce the quantity and quality of the fruit, and sometimes even lead to the death of the entire plant. The high immunity of the plant is especially important in regions with a cool and humid climate, which contributes to the rapid development of diseases.
  • Productivity. Depending on the variety, 1 m 2 can be grown from 2 to 20 kg of eggplants. But high-yielding varieties are quite demanding on growing conditions and fully reveal their potential only in regions with a very hot climate and fertile soil, or in greenhouses.
  • Ripening terms. On this basis, eggplants are divided into early (75-120 days before the beginning of fruiting) and late (more than 120 days). In most regions of our country, the short summer does not allow growing late varieties.
  • The size of the bush. There are undersized (from 50 to 110 cm) and tall (from 120 to 200 cm) varieties. In the open field and under temporary film shelters, stunted eggplants are often grown, requiring less care and attention. All tall varieties require mandatory tying to a support, without which their fragile trunk can break. In addition, they need more moisture and nutrients.

Eggplant care

Comprehensive eggplant care consists of such basic tasks as feeding, watering, forming a bush and protecting the plant.

The first feeding is carried out in the phase of 2-3 leaves or 1.5-2.0 weeks after the pick. I make top dressing with irrigation water. I am preparing a nutrient solution based on a bucket of water: 5-10 g of urea and 30 g of water-soluble superphosphate. You can prepare a solution from a complete mineral fertilizer by dissolving 30-35 g of nitrophoska in 10 liters of water. After feeding, the leaves are washed with clean water from a spray bottle to prevent chemical burns of young plants.

The second feeding is carried out with the same composition 7-10 days before planting on a permanent basis, but without nitrogen. Better to carry out the second top dressing with fertilizer "Kemira", intended for complex plant care. This fertilizer contains, in addition to the main nutrients, microelements boron, manganese, molybdenum, iron, which will give the plants additional energy.
Eggplant is a very moisture-loving culture. During the growing season, he needs watering twice a week, and in hot summer conditions it would be more correct to water him every other day. After moistening, the near-stem zone should be carefully loosened: the formation of a crust inhibits the culture.

Competent shaping of the bush directly affects the future harvest. The correct bush should consist of a maximum of three stems, for the role of which the three strongest shoots are selected. After the bush is formed, new shoots are removed when their length reaches 5 cm. Leaves shading the sun's rays are also subject to removal: an ovary is formed on the plant only when the sun hits the flowers. To prevent the shoots from breaking, a trellis is stretched over each row, to which the plants are tied.
